Self -taught or not?
When I reading descriptions of bakers, one comes across some who are "self -taught". I am not one of those.
If I don't have the money or the class isn't high enough on my priorty list, I look on the internet to find out as much as I can without having to pay.
However, I think that attending a class in person is beneficial for these reasons: one can learn tips and lessons without learning the hard way or over a few years, the instructor can see what one is doing and help correct you and one can get better use out of ones tools with extra input. As a stay at home mother, I also enjoy the opportunity to get out and meet others who have similar interests.
A class well presented
Well, today I attended a class on airbrushing biscuits (with food colouring). I've admired a number of techniques people use for decorating biscuits and this is one I hadn't tried out. The class was presented by Ashleigh Temple of the Biscuit Studio. There was a small pop up shop available for biscuit supplies. Ashleigh was prepared with all the necessary materials and tools for the students. The use of a projector showing a close-up of the biscuit and what she was doing made it easy to follow and she gave clear directions and tips.
I learned a number of things I can do with decorating biscuits using and airbrush.
Scope for the new technique:
With this technique, it will be possible to do detailed and repeated designs on a larger scale than would be possible by hand. Crisper lines and more accurate detailing will also reduce waste.
What does it mean for my customer:
Small Beginnings Home Bakery will now be able to make seasonal themed biscuit sets available if required (teacher/staff appreciation, Christmas, etc.). My main client focus does not currently include servicing large companies, but I will now be able to put logos on biscuits for companies for advertising or staff gifts will be possible.
Have a happy weekend further!
